Willoughby Writer's Workshop

Willoughby Writer's Workshop In-Person

The Willoughby Writer’s Workshop is a twice-monthly workshop for local fiction writers focusing on short stories, which we define as completed works of 10,000 words or less.

The group will meet every other Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Willoughby Public Library.

Writers will share their completed works on a rotating basis. Submissions are due by email the week before each meeting. Paper copies of the stories will be provided at the meeting itself. Writers are expected to arrive at the meeting having read each submission for the week, prepared to make comments.

At the meeting, each writer will read a snippet of their work in the meeting to refresh everyone’s memory. Writers will then share their reactions, making written notes on the paper copies of each story which the writer will then take home.

Our critiques will be modeled after university workshops where constructive comments are descriptive but not prescriptive. In other words, you will react to the written work but refrain from making definitive comments as to how to “fix” a story.

Depending on the number of members, we will likely critique two to four stories per session, and writers will share either monthly or every other month.

While this group focuses on short stories, it is open to writers of all backgrounds who would like to try their hand at this form. Poets, novelists and even screenwriters find they have a knack for compelling short fiction. All genres and experience levels are welcome.

Led by Kristine Gill, a Mentor native and full-time freelance writer living in Willoughby. She spent the last decade in Florida as a journalist and government spokesperson. In 2014, she founded the Naples Writers’ Workshop. Her short fiction has been published in Florida Weekly and Everyday Fiction. Her freelance work has been featured in Fortune Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens and Crain’s Cleveland. She co-hosts a podcast called Why Is This Good? examining published fiction and what makes it great.
